A strong man likes to use his body, but an intelligent man enjoys using his mind. He likes to solve mysteries. To ordinary people, intelligent people are often a mystery. Their skills can seem almost unnatural. One of these unusually intelligent people is my strange friend, Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin.
In the spring and summer of 18 – In lived in Paris, and there I met Dupin. Dupin came from an excellent family, but he was now very poor. He had little interest in money. He lived simply. He loved books, though, and still bought many of them.
