Three Men in a Boat

There were four of us - George, William Samuel Harris, myself and my dog, Montmorency. We were sitting in my room, smoking and talking about how bad we were - bad from medical point of view I mean, of course.
We were all feeling tired and were getting quite nervous about it. Harris said that he often felt giddy, and that he didn't know what he was doing; and then George said that he felt giddy and did not know what he was doing. I had problems with my liver. I had been reading an advertisement for liver medicine. This advertisement gave a list of the symptoms you have when your liver is not well. I had all of them.
It is a most extraordinary thing, but I never can read an advertisement for a medicine without being forced to the conclusion that I am suffering from the particular disease described, in its worst form.

To be continued...
