As the boats sailed away from the Pequod, sharks could be seen following Ahab’s boat.
Just as the day before, the White Whale attacked and immediately damaged two of the boats. As the whale turned, Ahab was able to throw a harpoon at him. He hit Moby Dick. The whale turned around, but this time he attacked the ship, not Ahab’s boat. Moby Dick smashed into the Pequod with such force that the ship began to sink. Ahab, now furious, threw another harpoon at the White Whale and hit him, nut the rope of the harpoon got caught around Ahab’s neck and Ahab was pulled out of the boat in an instant. He was gone forever. The Pequod, injured by Moby Dick’s attack, was sinking and as it sank it created a great whirlpool that pulled down everything with it.
Now small birds flew screaming over the whirlpool; then all collapsed and the great shroud of the sea rolled on as it rolled five thousand years ago.
