Bonnie and Clyde robbed lots of banks in the small towns in Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas and Alabama. The police were always very close but never caught them. The rich people were stunned. “It’s terrible,” they said. “The police are no good. They can’t catch two bank robbers.”
The poor people clapped every time a bank was robbed. “Bonnie and Clyde are criminals because they haven’t got any work,” they shouted. Everybody laughed at the police.
“You must catch these bandits,” said the President of the United States. “The army, the navy, the air force and the marines must help the police to capture them.”
The robbers wanted to rob a big bank in an important city. They needed another car. This time they stole an English car, then they went north to Chicago. It was an enormous city. The gangster’s city! The streets were big with lots of lights. They were crowded with people and traffic. There were dozens of banks! “This is Paradise,” said Bonnie. “and the police will never find us there!”
